Death note - Film (Netflix)
Media textual analysis
From
analysing 5 minutes of the thriller horror movie death note, I have analysed that
the extract has continuous Mise en scene changes. This can be seen in the beginning
of the film where we see the establishing shot as the city [Seattle], thus
changing to a different setting showing us a high school in which the
established shot changes, settling in a playground.
Furthermore
the visual aesthetics of the scene continuously changes, for example, in the beginning
of the scene the camera purposely changes to a low angle shot to portray to the
audiences that the boy is inferior to the bully, this is presented by the low angle
shot, aiming the camera to the boy may also convey that the producer wants to
present the character as less powerful and portray him in the eye of the
audience as the typical victim of hostile high school life.
Furthermore the
way in which the editing was set suggested and hinted to audiences that the
movie was going to be a thriller. This theory or idea was influenced by the
writing displayed in the beginning of the production. The writing was presented
in bubble writing with decorations of the biblical cross and sinister colours
such as red and black to create a sense of fear and tension. Also the writing format could also be
recognised as the thriller or horror genre.
Also the
editing is a significant factor towards the creation of the production as it
captures the attention of the audience and gives the audience an insight on what
the production will present.
Camera angles
In death
note we see a consistent change of levels, this being shown through the camera shots.
For example, a scene filmed in a classroom where the main character has fallen asleep
during detention. The scene beginnings with an established shot. As the camera
slowly zooms out, the music develops through the speed creating a sense of expectation,
the music gives a sense to the audience that something is going to appear or
happen. We also see a high angle shot were the teacher slams the book on the
table, we see a wide angle and high angle shot.
This
illustrates to the audience that the teacher has immense authority and power
over the character. The producer is portraying to the audience that the teacher
is the superior or the one in control. This can be perceive through the high
angle shot. The camera focus, as the next scene begins, we see a close or a zoomed in shot of a
prop which is an apple. This is focused on in the beginning primarily because
as the scene progresses we are introduced to our next main character, the Demon,
were the purpose of the apple is then revealed, the Demon eats the apple and
rolls it back to the character creating a suspense with in the movie.
In the
beginning there is a continuous change in focus, the camera consistently moves
from the focus of the bully to the main character very quickly building the
tension in the scene. This technique creates an atmosphere for the audience.
Good! Very detailed analysis using key terminology. Make sure you cover all areas of analysis (mise end scene, editing) in as much detail as you have for camera angles.
